Klax - Critical Presents - Binary Vol 2 (2014)

Youthful Brighton trio Klax step up with three fresh d&b tracks, released for the next instalment of Critical Records Binary imprint. Binary is Critical Records new digital-only imprint, designed to embrace the quick accessibility of the downloadable release and harness its useful elements. Quick to assert they are not turning their back on the physical medium by placing a focus on the positives of downloading, nevertheless it is undeniably also one step further from the purist’s ideal of a wax-only world.

Regardless of the digital vs physical debate, one thing is certain about their new release and that is this: it’s an absolute cracker. Klax deliver three tracks of militant, tech-stepping drum & bass that stay true to the high standard set by Kasra’s well-respected label. With a handful of releases so far, dropped through the likes of Uprise Audio and Renegade Hardware, being picked up by the Critical bossman himself for their next release adds yet another string to the trio’s metaphorical bow. ‘Blackball’ is a rolling fusion of deep and techy beats, fleshed out with a jabbing mids and haunting vocals. Punctuated with a short atmospheric break in it’s mid-section, Klax bring the beat back up gently only to launch the track back into a second filthy drop. ‘Cornerstone’, for me, is the highlight. Dominated by a warbling sub bass, which propels the track forward amidst tight drum work, this one will be tearing up dance floors in no time. Closing track ‘Hoodrat’ opens with tensely pounding drum work, laying the foundations for an intensely cinematic introduction before launching into serious war-vibe territory. Formidable kick drums thud under the track’s repeated vocal sample and eerie, haunting melodics. Set for Worldwide release on September 29th, there’s currently no preview on SoundCloud - however, this month’s Critical Podcast from Foreign Concept includes both ‘Hoodrat’ and ‘Blackball’. It starts with some funky and soulful hip hop beats before moving into drum and bass, and is good all the way through! Check it out below.
